Up to 16,000 people have been overpaid on the first self-employed income support grant.
HMRC said that in some cases it didn’t take all the information from self-employed claimants’ tax returns into account, meaning their grants weren’t calculated correctly. HMRC says around 0.6% of the grants paid out through SEISS include an overpayment.
Those who’ve been overpaid are now receiving letters from HMRC about the error. If you have been overpaid, you won’t have to pay it back. However you may receive less than expected for the second grant.
The second round of the self-employment grant scheme opened for applications on 17 August.
